Federal coverage only. This directory lists campgrounds on federal land (Forest Service, Park Service, BLM, Corps of Engineers and other agencies) from the Recreation.gov RIDB export. State-park, county and private/KOA campgrounds are out of scope.

South Dakota contains 14 federal campgrounds offering 548 overnight sites across three managing agencies. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates six campgrounds, primarily along the Missouri River and other water resources. The U.S. Forest Service manages five campgrounds in the Black Hills National Forest and surrounding areas. The National Park Service operates three campgrounds, including facilities at Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Badlands National Park. Most South Dakota federal campgrounds—13 of the 14—accept advance reservations through Recreation.gov, where visitors can check real-time site availability and make bookings.

This directory covers federal campgrounds only. State park campgrounds and privately operated facilities such as KOA are outside this scope and should be researched separately. For current information on site availability, amenities, and to reserve a campsite at any of South Dakota's federal campgrounds, visit Recreation.gov directly. Conditions and offerings at individual locations may vary seasonally, so checking the reservation system is recommended before planning your visit.
