South Dakota contains 14 federal campgrounds offering 548 overnight sites across three managing agencies. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates six campgrounds, primarily along the Missouri River and other water resources. The U.S. Forest Service manages five campgrounds in the Black Hills National Forest and surrounding areas. The National Park Service operates three campgrounds, including facilities at Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Badlands National Park. Most South Dakota federal campgrounds—13 of the 14—accept advance reservations through Recreation.gov, where visitors can check real-time site availability and make bookings.
